When this printed paper is placed onto the desired material and subjected to heat and pressure, the ink undergoes a transformation. It turns into a gas, which then permeates the very fibers of the material. As it cools, the gas reverts back to a solid state, permanently bonding with the material at a molecular level.

This means the design doesn’t sit on top of the fabric like traditional screen printing. Instead, it becomes an integral part of the material itself. How Does Sublimation Printing Actually Work?

The Sublimation Ink and Transfer Paper

First, you need sublimation inks. These are not your standard inkjet inks. They are specifically formulated to sublimate, meaning they can turn directly from a solid to a gas when heated. These inks are typically vibrant and designed for excellent color reproduction.

Next, these inks are printed onto a special sublimation transfer paper. This paper is coated to absorb the ink effectively and release it as a gas under heat. The image is printed in reverse on this paper, as it will be flipped when transferred to the final product.

The printed transfer paper is then aligned with the material you wish to print on. This material must be polyester-based or have a special polymer coating designed to accept the sublimated dyes. Common examples include polyester fabrics, ceramic mugs, metal plates, and even some types of plastic.

A heat press machine is then used to apply both high heat and significant pressure for a specific duration. Temperatures typically range from 350°F to 400°F (175°C to 205°C). This intense heat causes the sublimation ink on the paper to turn into a gas.

Simultaneously, the pressure ensures that the gas penetrates the material’s surface. The pores of the polyester or coating open up under the heat, allowing the gaseous ink to infuse into them.

Cooling and Permanent Bonding

Once the heat and pressure cycle is complete, the transfer paper is removed. As the material cools, the gaseous ink solidifies and becomes permanently embedded within the material’s fibers or coating. This creates a vibrant, durable, and integrated design.
